Machine Made Clay Tile Roof Replacement

Everyday Roofing completed this machine made clay tile roof replacement in Portsmouth. The roof now has a traditional finish with red/brown plain clay tiles.

First, our team removed the existing clay tiles from the pitched roof. We also stripped out the old rotten battens. This allowed us to inspect and clean the roof structure before the new installation began.

Next, we prepared the rafters for a new breathable roofing membrane. We then installed fully treated roof battens at the correct spacing. As a result, the new clay tiles had a secure and even base.

The finished roof includes third-round hip tiles and lead flashing to the abutment wall. In addition, we installed zinc soakers to help protect the roof where it meets the wall.

Work Completed

The project included:

  • Removal of the previous clay roof tiles
  • Removal of old rotten battens
  • Cleaning and preparation of the roof rafters
  • Installation of breathable roofing membrane
  • Installation of fully treated roofing battens
  • Battens spaced to suit the new clay tile gauge
  • Zinc soakers installed where required
  • Lead flashing fitted to the abutment wall
  • New matched clay tiles installed
  • Third-round hip tiles installed to complete the roof
  • Final checks and site tidy-up
  • Materials Used

For this project, we used red/brown machine made plain clay tiles. These tiles give the roof a traditional appearance. However, they also provide the consistency of a modern manufactured tile.

We installed new treated roofing battens beneath the tile covering. These battens support the clay tiles and help keep the roof lines neat. In addition, the breathable membrane adds a secondary layer of weather protection.

The abutment wall needed careful detailing. Therefore, we installed zinc soakers and lead flashing to protect this vulnerable junction. This helps direct rainwater away from the wall and roof connection.

About Machine Made Clay Roof Tiles

Machine made clay tiles offer a classic look with reliable sizing and shape. They suit many traditional homes across Portsmouth and the surrounding areas.

Because these are plain clay tiles, they create a neat double-lap roof covering. This gives the roof a timeless finish with strong weather resistance. In addition, the red/brown colour works well with brickwork and older property styles.

These tiles are a good choice when a homeowner wants a traditional roof appearance. However, they still want the benefits of a modern roof installation.

Lead Flashing and Zinc Soaker Details

The roof meets an abutment wall, so correct weathering details were essential. Our team installed zinc soakers beneath the tiles at the wall junction. We then finished the area with lead flashing.

This combination helps protect one of the most common leak points on pitched roofs. As a result, the roof has a much stronger weatherproof detail where it meets the wall.

For smaller leaks or damaged flashing, Everyday Roofing also provides roof repairs in Portsmouth.

Finished Result

The finished roof looks clean, traditional and well matched to the property. The red/brown clay tiles suit the building’s character. Meanwhile, the third-round hip tiles give the roof a neat and classic finish.

The lead flashing also creates a strong weatherproof detail at the abutment wall. As a result, the property now has a roof built for long-term protection.

How Long Will This New Roof Last?

A well-installed clay tile roof can last for many decades. In many cases, clay roof tiles can last 60 years or more with the right installation and maintenance.

However, lifespan depends on several factors. These include exposure, roof pitch, ventilation, weather conditions and ongoing maintenance. Therefore, regular checks still help protect the roof over time.

Because this project included new membrane, battens, tiles, soakers and lead flashing, the client now has a complete roof system.
